Before Your First Lesson

Watch this before you come. It covers everything. Takes about five minutes.

Video coming soon.

You do not need to do anything to prepare.

You do not need to do anything to prepare. No experience. No gear. No technique to learn before you arrive. Your only job is to show up. Here is everything else you need to know.

  • 94166 Co Rd 690, Dowagiac, MI 49047 Round Lake, Sister Lakes, Michigan

We are right on Round Lake. Turn onto Co Rd 690 and you will see us on your left. Parking is right out front. If you have any trouble finding us or figuring out where to go, call or text (269) 424-6800 and we will come out front to meet you.

  • Come inside when you arrive. Someone from the team will get you checked in and pointed in the right direction. Plan to arrive about ten minutes early so you are not rushed and have a few minutes to look around before your session starts.

  • The gear you ride during your lesson is the same gear we carry in the pro shop. Boards, bindings, ropes, vests. If something feels right on the water and you want to know more about it, we can answer every question right there after your session.

You are welcome to bring your own gear if you have it and prefer to ride in it. If you are not sure whether what you have is right for where you are, your coach can take a look and give you an honest answer.

Not sure what gear even makes sense for you yet? Come in a few minutes early and tell us what sport you are learning. We will point you in the right direction. No pressure. We just know the gear.

  • Bill Boston founded The Boarder Line in 1999 and leads our coaching program. We have a team of experienced coaches available throughout the season and coaches are booked by availability. Many already have sessions reserved well into the summer.

If you have a preference for a specific coach let us know when you book. The best way to get the time and coach you want is to reach out early.

  • Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and a water bottle. We take care of everything else.

  • Board shorts, a rash guard, or a swimsuit. Whatever you are comfortable getting wet in. Skip the jeans and cotton. You will be in the water.

  • You will meet your coach on shore first. They will walk you through your deep water start, body position, what the rope feels like, and what to do when you fall. You will practice the motion before you ever get in the water so nothing is a complete surprise when the boat pulls.

Then you get in. Your coach talks you through every attempt and adjusts what they see in real time. You will fall. That is normal and expected. Every rider does. By the end of your session you will feel a real difference from where you started.

  • Tell your coach at the start of the session. They will pace things around you. Nobody gets pushed faster than they want to go. Most people are surprised by how quickly the nerves go away once they are in the water.

  • Life vests are worn by every rider at every level for every session. Safe falling technique is covered on shore before you get in the water. The boat is driven by an experienced driver. You are in good hands.

  • Your coach will talk you through what you did well and what to work on next time. If something felt good on the water and you want to look at gear, head back into the pro shop. Your coach can walk you in and help you find exactly what you were riding. We carry Liquid Force, Radar, Surftech, Acme, and Mission. Everything in the shop is gear we use ourselves.

If you want to book your next session you can take care of that right there before you leave.
